From Lateral Violence to Lateral Kindness — Decolonizing Our Relationships

How do we identify and overcome some of the most abrasive forms of incivility within our various communities and work towards building an ethic of care? How do our actions perpetuate the very systems we seek to change?

Through this workshop, we will not only identify how lateral violence manifests and is maintained by a colonial mindset, but more importantly, we will explore ways to liberate ourselves from this cycle of oppression and build a more respectful and healing workplace. The workshop will introduce participants to the concept of lateral kindness and provides opportunities to explore lateral kindness as a liberatory and decolonizing practice in addressing lateral oppression/violence in the workplace, institutional setting, and interpersonal relationships.

About the Presenter

Dr. Davis-White Eyes

Dr. Davis-White Eyes earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in American History), and her Master of Arts from UCLA in American Indian Studies with a specific focus on History and Law. In addition, Allison earned her Ph.D. from OSU in Adult Higher Education with an emphasis on International Education.

Currently, Dr. Davis-White Eyes is affiliate faculty within the School of Public Policy and the School of Language, Culture, and Society. Her research areas of interest include post-colonial cosmopolitanism, subaltern research ethics and decolonizing methodologies, mobilities of culture and identity, queering of identity and space, as well as intersectionality in theory and organizational praxis.
