On June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, the Emancipation Proclamation was announced, thus commemorating the end of Black enslavement in America. This profound event has become known as Juneteenth, Freedom Day, or Emancipation Day and serves as a time to commemorate the end of the heinous practice of chattel slavery.
