Inaugural Juneteenth Celebration: Save the Date and Register Today

2022-05-23T13:10:20-07:00

Defining moments in history remind us of the ongoing fight for freedom, justice, and equity. On June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, the Emancipation Proclamation was announced, thus commemorating the end of Black enslavement in America. This profound event has become known as Juneteenth, Freedom Day, or Emancipation Day and serves as a time to commemorate the end of the heinous practice of chattel slavery.  Fielding Graduate University strives to be an equity-serving institution by acknowledging our shared histories and engaging cultural moments that represent the diversity of our Fielding community.  This year we host the Inaugural Celebration event. Our [...]

VP of DEI Statement Regarding Buffalo Mass Shooting

2022-05-16T16:56:22-07:00

Dear Fielding Community, Our nation experienced a tragic event on May 14th in Buffalo, New York. As many of you know, a gunman killed ten people and injured three at a grocery store mid-day. At least eleven of the individuals were Black, and the neighborhood was intentionally chosen because of the high percentage of Black people who live there. The person who committed this crime boldly admitted to being a racist and a proponent of white supremacy. Tragedies such as this have become all too common in this, “our America.” Acts of senseless violence rooted in extremism remind us that [...]

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Reflections from V.P. of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

2022-04-29T14:19:55-07:00

Fielding is proud to join the nation in recognizing Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. This is a time to acknowledge and celebrate those who make up the fastest growing racial or ethnic group in the United States. Their cultures, diverse stories and contributions, scholarship, and achievements have enriched the country’s culture and history—and our global Fielding community. Let us be clear, we cannot celebrate heritage without acknowledging history. These achievements were not without struggle, and within that struggle came perseverance and hope. As a nation, we must honestly acknowledge and address the Chinese Exclusion Act of [...]

VP of DEI: Reflections on Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day

2022-05-12T19:14:48-07:00

Dear Fielding Community, I am writing to commemorate Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. As we journey through life, we meet people who have lived through extraordinary circumstances. It is hard to imagine how individuals not only survive instances of deep trauma but manage to find a way to live in and with a world that betrayed them at some point in their life. It is harder still when the extraordinary circumstance involves unspeakable inhumane acts. The betrayal becomes a moral betrayal against life itself – the deepest cut of all. As an undergraduate college student, I was blessed to learn from [...]

Is Being an Ally Enough?

2022-04-04T21:21:03-07:00

By Fielding alum Theresa Southam, Ph.D. (HOD’20) Awareness of inequities in this world continues to grow. Following the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s responses to the 94 calls for action amass in Canada. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought attention to longstanding health inequities in the United States. The murder of George Floyd has made many reflect on the complicit nature of bystanders and systemic racism. It is difficult to ignore one’s role in colonization, inequity, and racism. To change, academics and non-academics may embrace the role of ally. Being an ally involves awareness of the horrific histories that have led to systemic [...]
